    Theory and applications of artificial neural networks

    In this thesis some fundamental theoretical problems about artificial neural networks and their application in communication and control systems are discussed. We consider the convergence properties of the Back-Propagation algorithm which is widely used for training of artificial neural networks, and two stepsize variation techniques are proposed to accelerate convergence. Simulation results demonstrate significant improvement over conventional Back-Propagation algorithms. We also discuss the relationship between generalization performance of artificial neural networks and their structure and representation strategy. It is shown that the structure of the network which represent a priori knowledge of the environment has a strong influence on generalization performance. A Theorem about the number of hidden units and the capacity of self-association MLP (Multi-Layer Perceptron) type network is also given in the thesis. In the application part of the thesis, we discuss the feasibility of using artificial neural networks for nonlinear system identification. Some advantages and disadvantages of this approach are analyzed. The thesis continues with a study of artificial neural networks applied to communication channel equalization and the problem of call access control in broadband ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) communication networks. A final chapter provides overall conclusions and suggestions for further work

    This paper presents a wearable biopatch prototype for body surface potential measurement. It combines three key technologies, including mixed-signal system on chip (SoC) technology, inkjet printing technology, and anisotropic conductive adhesive (ACA) bonding technology. An integral part of the biopatch is a low-power low-noise SoC. The SoC contains a tunable analog front end, a successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter, and a reconfigurable digital controller. The electrodes, interconnections, and interposer are implemented by inkjet-printing the silver ink precisely on a flexible substrate. The reliability of printed traces is evaluated by static bending tests. ACA is used to attach the SoC to the printed structures and form the flexible hybrid system. The biopatch prototype is light and thin with a physical size of 16 cm x 16 cm. Measurement results show that low-noise concurrent electrocardiogram signals from eight chest points have been successfully recorded using the implemented biopatch.QC 20130805.     A Modified KNN Algorithm for Activity Recognition in Smart Home

    Nowadays, more and more elderly people cannot take care of themselves, and feel uncomfortable in daily activities. Smart home systems can help to improve daily life of elderly people. A smart home can bring residents a more comfortable living environment by recognizing the daily activities automatically. In this paper, in order to improve the accuracy of activity recognition in smart homes, we conduct some improvements in data preprocess and recognition phase, and more importantly, a novel sensor segmentation method and a modified KNN algorithm are proposed. The segmentation algorithm employs segment sensor data into fragments based on predefined activity knowledge, and then the proposed modified KNN algorithm uses center distances as a measure for classification. We also conduct comprehensive experiments, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the other classifiers

    A New Approach to Constrain Black Hole Spins in Active Galaxies Using Optical Reverberation Mapping

    A tight relation between the size of the broad-line region (BLR) and optical luminosity has been established in about 50 active galactic nuclei studied through reverberation mapping of the broad Hbeta emission line. The R_blr-L relation arises from simple photoionization considerations. Using a general relativistic model of an optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disk, we show that the ionizing luminosity jointly depends on black hole mass, accretion rate, and spin. The non-monotonic relation between the ionizing and optical luminosity gives rise to a complicated relation between the BLR size and the optical luminosity. We show that the reverberation lag of Hbeta to the varying continuum depends very sensitively to black hole spin. For retrograde spins, the disk is so cold that there is a deficit of ionizing photons in the BLR, resulting in shrinkage of the hydrogen ionization front with increasing optical luminosity, and hence shortened Hbeta lags. This effect is specially striking for luminous quasars undergoing retrograde accretion, manifesting in strong deviations from the canonical R_blr-L relation. This could lead to a method to estimate black hole spins of quasars and to study their cosmic evolution. At the same time, the small scatter of the observed R_blr-L relation for the current sample of reverberation-mapped active galaxies implies that the majority of these sources have rapidly spinning black holes.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, to appear in ApJ

    New molecular candidates: X(1910), X(2200), and X(2350)

    Assuming the newly observed resonant structures X(1910), X(2200), and X(2350) as ωω\omega\omega, ωϕ\omega\phi, and ϕϕ\phi\phi molecular states respectively, we compute their mass values in the framework of QCD sum rules. The numerical results are 1.97±0.17GeV1.97\pm0.17 {GeV} for ωω\omega\omega state, 2.07±0.21GeV2.07\pm0.21 {GeV} for ωϕ\omega\phi state, and 2.18±0.29GeV2.18\pm0.29 {GeV} for ϕϕ\phi\phi state, which coincide with the experimental values of X(1910), X(2200), and X(2350), respectively. This supports the statement that X(1910), X(2200), and X(2350) could be ωω\omega\omega, ωϕ\omega\phi, and ϕϕ\phi\phi molecular candidates respectively.Comment: 9 pages, 9 eps figures; the name of X(2000) changed to X(1910) according to the updated data of experiments; more references and discussions added; accepted for publication in PRD. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1211.2277, arXiv:1201.341
